ISBN 1-56414-208-6 ($19.99). 249 pages. This book

listing for the award is repeated in each field.

bulk of the book by 50%.

only about 1,000 different listings when the
duplicates are eliminated. The book is a worldwide
guide only in the sense that it includes listings
for study abroad by US students. Less than 60 of
the awards are available to international students,
with the bulk of those for Canadian students. The
book includes several indexes, and is compiled from

College Blue Book is a
five-volume set that provides information about
post-secondary education and financial aid. Volume
5, which is 895 pages long,
provides information about scholarships,
fellowships, grants, and loans from private and
public sources. It includes information about awards
for undergraduate students, graduate students, and
post-doctoral students. Awards are organized
according to discipline, meaning that some listings
are repeated. So, even though the awards are
numbered from 1 to 2,753, the book lists only about
2,000 distinct award programs from approximately 1,000
sponsors. The book includes award title,
sponsor, subject, and education level indexes. The
CD-ROM lets you search for awards by subject area,
award title, sponsor, and educational level. Volume
5 (ISBN 0-02-895026-7) was previously available
separately for $48.00, but this appears to no
longer be true.

- Peterson's Scholarships, Grants, and Prizes 1997,
Peterson's Guides, Princeton, New Jersey, 1996.
ISBN 1-56079-696-0 ($24.95), ISBN 1-56079-734-7
(software only, $15 + $4.25 shipping). 501 pages.
This book lists more than 770,000 awards from 1,900
sources. It comes with a very nice Windows
scholarship database that provides the same
information as in the book, but in a convenient,
searchable format. (A Macintosh version is
available upon request.) The software lets you
enter a profile to find a list of awards that match
your interests. The matching award sources can be
sorted by name, deadline, number of awards, and
award amount. You can select a source for more
detailed information, such as the address and description.
The only flaw with this book is the claim that it lists
more than $2.5 billion in private aid. Peterson's
calculated that figure by summing the product of the
high award amount with the number of awards. This
overestimates the total by at least a factor of
seven. A more conservative estimate would place the total
amount of private aid listed at about $500 million,
which is still a considerable figure.
The book also includes state-controlled
scholarships and grants, in addition to private aid.
Revised annually.

- Edward H. Rosenwasser,
Less Competitive College Grants and Loans,
2nd edition, Student College Aid, Houston, Texas, 1995.
ISBN 0-932495-09-5 ($16.99 + $3.75 postage). 346
pages. This book is based on an interesting
concept. The idea is that the odds of winning a less
competitive grant are greater, so students should
focus on applying for those awards. Of course, if
the book sells well, the awards listed might become
more competitive, defeating the purpose of the book!
Many of the awards listed in the book have
geographic restrictions and include smaller awards
that are not very well publicized. The awards are
organized geographically by state and by
field. The book lists approximately 2,076
awards. There is no index, and the use of a sans
serif font makes the book hard to read. To
order a copy, call 1-800-245-5137 or 1-713-796-2209,
fax 1-713-796-9963, or write to Student College Aid,

restrictive programs, and programs for study outside

lists approximately
3,300 sources of financial aid, including about 450
listings for international students. The book is
broken down into separate sections for scholarships,
loans, and fellowships. Don't be misled by the
numbering scheme which makes it appear to have 5,600
listings; there are many gaps, with the actual
number of awards a little over 3,000. The book is of
reasonable quality and accuracy. This book includes
indexes for field and various student
characteristics. Previously entitled Directory of

The Complete Scholarship Book,
Sourcebooks, Inc., 1996.
ISBN 1-57071-127-5 ($22.95). 604 pages. This book
contains 5,047 listings, half of which are
college-specific. Even so, with more than 2,400

includes listings for many unusual scholarships not
found in other books, such as the National Pork
Fellowship or the American Welding Society
Scholarship. The book also includes a set of 52 good
tips for finding financial aid. It includes a
subject index, but could badly use a sponsor index.
The book is based on the
FastWeb
database compiled by FastWeb LLC. To place
